New Alzheimer's treatment restores memory...

Researchers from Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) at the University of Queensland have developed a wonderfully promising treatment for Alzheimer's. Using a non-invasive ultrasound technology they have reported fully restoring memory in 75% of mice tested. The treatment removes the neurotoxic amyloid plaque which causes cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s patients New Alzheimer's treatment restores memory...

While this treatment offers enormous promise to families around the world suffering with the pain of Alzheimer's there are still two important points to be made. One, utilising non-invasive ultrasound technology may restore memory only if used early on in the onset of the disease; once parts of the brain die then nothing can help restore it. Two, even if the treatment can restore memory, we need to understand still what caused the build up of he neurotoxic amyloid plaque in the first place! Factors such as homocysteine levels, and vitamin and mineral levels may play a part in preventing the disease in the first place, or of it reoccurring in the future.

Why do I care? My dad died of Alzheimer's three years ago (as did my uncle and grandmother) and this new treatment, along with nutritional knowledge, may well have allowed him to meet his two new grandchildren...
